Hey guys!
I’ve got pretty exciting news to share with you! As of today, you can listen to my podcast on YouTube here. The first episode can be found here, whereas the second episode (e.g., my conversation with Karina Alce) can be found here.
It took me a lot longer than I expected to have this done, but I’m glad I was finally able to do what needed to be done. I know it’s a lot easier to share YouTube links than it is to share Spotify links, for instance, so my podcast should be easier to share now. Also, it’s easier to see how many people have listened to the podcast on YouTube than it is on other platforms.
I used Adobe After Effects to render the video. I love using Adobe products as they are impressively user-intuitive, but they are on the pricey side, and I’m not a fan of the subscription-based model for software in general.
Unfortunately, I use a Surface tablet for everything I need a computer for, so the rendering time for the first (seven-minute) podcast episode was about thirty minutes, whereas the rendering time for the second (eighty-seven-minute) podcast was slightly less than a week! After this, I had to upload the videos to YouTube, which thankfully wasn’t too long, relatively speaking. Finally, creating thumbnails using Photoshop took no time at all. (It seems the tasks I had to do were increasingly short!)
I had initially wanted to render the video at sixty frames per second, but after careful deliberation with my girlfriend, I decided to render the videos at thirty frames per second. Admittedly, the important part of the video is the audio, everything else is purely aesthetics (unless, say, I were to record video for my conversations in the future). It still took a really long time to render the video, however, and I suspect it’s because I used the WAV audio file for the video, rather than a compressed version. Something that did help was rendering the video onto an SSD, as opposed to doing it on an HDD. The writing speed was about five times faster on the SSD, but it still took way too long… I will probably have to compress the audio in the future. 😬
That being said, I would probably not recommend streaming my videos on cellular data… I’m not sure how much YouTube compresses audio, but the final size of my second podcast video was about 80 GB!
In any case, go check out my episodes if you haven’t already! In the meantime, I’ll keep writing and try to find another guest to interview.
Until next time!
Jo
